Illinois Yield ChallengeThe purpose of the Yield Challenge -- funded by the Illinois soybean checkoff -- is to provide a platform that encourages soybean growers to try new yield-enhancing practices and share the information learned through those innovations. By welcoming challenging conditions such as pests, government mandates, difficult weather patterns, yield-limiting soil types and more, participants can explore a wide variety of methods and products to realize higher yields and ultimately improve their bottomline profitability. "This program provides growers with an extraordinary opportunity to try new approaches in crop management," explains ISA Production Committee Chair Dan Farney. "Typically, growers would have to test new practices and wait until harvest to see what happens. With this program, their control plots allow them to review data and make comparisons throughout the growing season."
In 2011, participating teams reported an average increase of 3.5 bushels per acre... that's an average yield increase of 6.45 percent! Plus, approximately 10 percent of our 2011 growers achieved yields of at least 80 bushels, which is well above the state average of 51.5. Another group -- comprised of 15 individual growers -- attained increases of at least 10 bushels per acre, contributing heavily to their teams' overall results. Check out all the 2011 winners here. Now it's time for growers, students, and every major crop input supplier and manufacturer in the soybean industry to put their methods to the test. Sign up for the 2012 Yield Challenge today!
